When the pandemic began, people were either busy with baking ‘ube pandesal’ or whisking ‘dalgona coffee’ but Love, Marie on the other hand, actually took the opportunity to begin their dream of starting a music career, and so their debut single “Know Better” was born. HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

Since I was in kindergarten I’ve always been singing because everyone in my family loves music.

 

DID SOMEONE INSPIRE YOU TO DO MUSIC? WHO IS IT?

Yes, artists like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Ariana, Rihanna, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, Sza, Adele, Taylor, Miley Cyrus and many more inspired me to do music. They influenced how I write my songs, how my music sounds and more.

WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT? WHAT INSTRUMENT IS IT? HOW DID YOU LEARN IT?

I used to play piano, drums and guitar. Some friends taught me how to play them but [now] I don’t have much time to practice anymore.

WHAT IS YOUR ARTIST NAME? ARE YOU USING YOUR REAL NAME? IF NOT, WHAT IS IT AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT NAME?

So I ended up using Love, Marie as my artist name. My real name is Jomarie so I just kind of’ played with that to make it more feminine since I’m a drag queen and I dress up as a woman when I’m performing and when I [write] my song I’m this other persona of me which is more feminine than what I normally am.

ARE YOU FROM A MUSICALLY INCLINED FAMILY? WHO PLAYS WHAT INSTRUMENTS?

Yes, my grandfather and my aunt play guitar. They love to sing a lot too.

 

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL STATUS? ARE YOU IN HIGHSCHOOL? COLLEGE? WHAT COURSE ARE YOU TAKING?

I actually graduated last year. I took BS Electronics Engineering and I’m already working now as an Application Development Associate in Accenture.

WHAT GENRE DO YOU CATEGORIZE YOURSELF INTO? WHY DID YOU LEAN TOWARDS THAT GENRE?

Mostly RnB and a little bit Hip Hop and Pop too. I just enjoy these genres more it feeds my soul haha.

HOW DO YOU WRITE YOUR SONGS? LYRICS FIRST? TUNE FIRST? BOTH? EXPLAIN WHEN, HOW, WHERE DO YOU USUALLY WRITE?

I always start to tune first, then write lyrics after just because I wanna know first how the tune makes me feel before I write the lyrics. Sometimes I write based on some experiences, sometimes I write [when] I get inspired by other people’s stories.

DO YOU HAVE ORIGINAL SONGS? IF YES, PLEASE NAME THEM AND EXPLAIN EACH SONG’S STORY

I have a song out now on many streaming platforms. It's called "Know Better" so basically this song is about a girl who realized that [a] guy is no good for her, she's better without him. She always knew what he's been doing to her but now she's had enough and she knows [and] accepted that they aren’t meant to be. Two different worlds can't be together and he better not be acting like a baby begging for chances because she ain't gonna give that to him no more. Yeah so listen to it, it's a very good song for our strong, independent ladies out there.

DO YOU HAVE SIBLINGS? HOW MANY ARE YOU IN THE FAMILY?

I have two, my older sister Marjorie and my younger sister Yvonne. We're five including mama and tatay.

 

ANY LOCAL MUSIC FETISHES? INTERNATIONAL? WHO ARE THEY? WHY?

I've just been enjoying Arthur Nery's music lately and internationally, I've been obsessed with Sza so much so I can't wait for her album to be released, I hope soon. Their songs will make you feel like you're in another world; you’re floating while listening to them.

DO YOU HAVE ANY LIVE GIG EXPERIENCES? WHAT IS THE BEST SO FAR? WHAT IS THE WORST? WHY?

Not those kinds of gigs just kind of performing for school programs but I would love to perform in any live gigs right now.

 

WHAT DID YOU DO THIS PANDEMIC ERA? HOW ARE YOU COPING WITH THE SITUATION?

Music really helped me a lot, because when I graduated it was so hard to find a job that will accept fresh graduates, so while I was looking for a job I've been writing songs as my main hobby and also doing makeup gigs for some income.

HOW DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT YOUR MUSIC CAREER?

It helped me a lot in a way where I had time to pursue my dreams of being an artist, have songs on streaming platforms and be known by many people someday.

 

DO YOU CONSIDER DOING MUSIC AS A CAREER (OR CAREER IN THE FUTURE)? OR IS IT JUST A HOBBY?

I absolutely consider this as my future career because I've been dreaming about performing in other Countries and being known worldwide. That has been my dream for a long time.

 

HOW DOES MUSIC HELP YOU IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?

It helps me go through things actually. I know we're all the same like when we're sad we listen to music, when we're happy we listen to music. We just love listening to music and matching it with what we're experiencing currently.

 

ANY MORE HOBBIES BESIDES DOING MUSIC?

I do drag. I'm a drag queen and I also love sewing. I've dreamt of being a famous fashion designer someday too.

ANY FUTURE PLANS? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS REGARDING YOUR MUSIC CAREER?

I will just keep on releasing music until everybody in the world knows me. I mean small steps are better than staying where you are right now. If you want to achieve something, do something about it.

ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY FOR YOUNG ASPIRING MUSICIANS WHO WHATS TO DO MUSIC AS A CAREER?

Just keep pushing yourself and never let other people's opinions get you. You know who you are as an artist and as a person so don't let [anybody’s] words stop you from chasing your dream.
